NEXIE Institute is seeking a final-year law student looking for a substantive university practicum, work-integrated learning or internship opportunity in commercial law, intellectual property and governance.

This is a project-based legal placement connected to the commercial establishment of an emerging Australian education and intellectual property venture.

Help establish the legal foundations behind a real venture.

NEXIE Institute has developed a growing ecosystem of proprietary educational methodologies, learning programs, professional resources, enterprise pathways and intellectual property.

NEXIE is now moving from founder-led development toward formal commercial establishment.

The legal and governance project will explore the structures required to:

  • establish the appropriate company and governance framework
  • protect and document intellectual property
  • develop trade mark and licensing strategies
  • establish commercial and digital-consumer terms
  • develop privacy and data-governance foundations
  • structure future NEXIE licensing models
  • support education and RTO partnerships
  • prepare for institutional and strategic partnerships
  • establish legal and commercial risk controls

Connected to Real Venture Commercialisation

Founder development and legal foundations moving together.

NEXIE has participated in Phase 1 of the University of Newcastle I2N FLIP founder-development pathway and plans to progress into FLIP Phase 2, subject to selection.

The Legal & Governance Practicum is designed to complement this commercialisation work.

Commercialising a Proprietary Education and Intellectual Property Ecosystem in Australia: Corporate, Licensing and Governance Considerations

The final research scope can be developed with the student, their university and the appointed legal supervisor.

Proposed Placement Period

Summer placement

The opportunity is intended primarily for a Summer university placement, subject to:

  • university approval
  • the student's practicum requirements
  • professional-supervision requirements
  • availability of an appropriate independent legal supervisor

The final number of hours or placement days will be agreed with the student's university.

Professional Supervision

Independent legal oversight

NEXIE intends to establish an appropriate professional-supervision arrangement with an Australian practising solicitor, preferably with experience in:

  • commercial law
  • corporate law
  • intellectual property
  • licensing
  • startups or emerging ventures
  • digital business

The student will not provide independent legal advice.

All work requiring professional legal judgement will remain subject to appropriate legal supervision and review.

Potential Pathway Beyond the Practicum

A placement first. A future role is possible, not promised.

The initial opportunity is designed as a university practicum or work-integrated-learning placement.

As NEXIE progresses through commercialisation, there may also be the possibility of a future paid Legal & Governance / Commercialisation Internship, subject to:

  • genuine business need
  • available funding
  • satisfactory performance
  • appropriate employment arrangements

No future role is guaranteed.
