Evidence, Research & Impact

Build the Evidence.
Test the Method.
Improve the Practice.

NEXIE draws on established knowledge from development, education, trauma-informed practice, relationships, stress, learning and environment.

That knowledge matters—but evidence for fields that inform NEXIE is not automatically evidence that the integrated NEXIE Method produces a particular outcome. NEXIE-specific claims should be tested through implementation, evaluation, participant experience and transparent research.

Evidence must be built, not assumed.

Know what the evidence means

Not All Evidence Answers
the Same Question.

01

Established Research

Independent research across development, education, trauma-informed practice, stress, relationships, learning, environment, participation and protective conditions.

It can support why principles are reasonable to explore; it does not prove NEXIE.
02

Source Frameworks

Influential work developed by others, appropriately acknowledged and used only within applicable rights.

Influence is not ownership.
03

NEXIE-Developed Methodology

The NEXIE process, PEDICure integration, contextual Detection, canonical Six Rs, Matrix Pause, Integrated Action Planning and cross-setting application.

These elements require direct evaluation.
04

NEXIE Evidence

Evidence built through pilots, implementation, participant and practitioner feedback, outcome measurement, case studies, evaluation and future research.

This is the evidence NEXIE still needs to build progressively.

Be Precise About What Is
Already Supported.

NEXIE can state that it is informed by established knowledge, uses a structured process, integrates trauma-informed principles, considers person, relationships and environment, includes relational reflection and repair, encourages boundaries and referral, and prioritises evaluation.

It should not claim proven reductions in trauma, mental ill-health, ACEs, conflict or turnover—or proven improvements in school, workplace, family or behavioural outcomes—without reliable NEXIE-specific evidence.

The existence of a plausible method is not the same as proof of effectiveness.

Begin close to the intervention

Measure the Outcomes NEXIE Can
Realistically Influence.

Understanding

Do people better understand changing capacity?

Response Confidence

Do adults feel more confident choosing a safer response?

Communication

Does communication improve?

Relational Repair

Can people reflect and repair more effectively after difficulty?

Participation

Does the person have greater opportunity to participate?

Protective Conditions

Are safer, more predictable conditions being strengthened?

Referral

Are people more confident identifying when needs exceed scope?

Self-Understanding

Do people better recognise patterns, needs and supports?

Start by measuring the changes closest to what NEXIE actually does.

Questions to test

Research Questions.
Not Conclusions.

01Can NEXIE improve how adults respond when a person’s capacity changes?
02Can NEXIE improve understanding of behaviour, learning, relationships and participation in context?
03Can NEXIE strengthen protective relational and environmental conditions?
04Can NEXIE increase confidence in responding safely and within scope?
05Can structured relational repair reduce repeated patterns of conflict or escalation?
06Can NEXIE improve continuity between home, education, workplace and community?
07Can NEXIE improve recognition of when specialist referral is needed?
08Can NEXIE increase self-understanding and agency?
09Can NEXIE strengthen adult awareness of triggers, patterns and relational responses before difficulty escalates?

The purpose of research is to discover what is true—not to confirm what we hope is true.

Research Across
Applied Settings.

01

Prevention

Earlier recognition, adult awareness, relational safety, timely support and fewer unnecessary escalations.

Prevention strengthens conditions and earlier recognition; it does not guarantee difficulty never occurs.
02

Education

Educator confidence, participation, student voice, family partnership, co-regulation, support planning and referral.

Measure participation, practice and response—not course completion alone.
03

Families

Parent confidence, behaviour as communication, stress recognition, repair, communication and support-seeking.

Do not measure parents against perfect regulation or conflict-free family life.
04

Workplaces

Manager confidence, communication, role clarity, team functioning, relational safety, inclusion, early support and repair.

Distinguish participant experience, behavioural change and organisational outcomes.

A specific component to evaluate

Does Structured Reflection Change
What Happens After Conflict?

The canonical Six Rs are Recount → Resonate → Respect → Rethink → Reflect → Reframe. Empathy and perspective-taking sit within Respect; the Matrix Pause occurs after Respect and before Rethink.

Perspective-takingPerceived fairnessEmpathyQuality of repairRepeated conflictPost-incident communicationRespect and safety
Repair should be evaluated through experience and changed interaction—not simply completion of the process.

Measure What Can Be Strengthened
Around the Person.

Indicators may include safe relationships, predictability, supportive adults, communication, emotional understanding, participation, agency, boundaries, conflict repair, early support and timely referral.

NEXIE's interest is not in measuring how damaged someone is. It is in whether safer and more supportive conditions are being strengthened.

Research boundary

Do Not Use ACE Scores
as a NEXIE Outcome Measure.

An individual ACE score should not diagnose, predict, rank risk, determine capacity or measure improvement. Where adversity research informs NEXIE, evaluation should focus on relationships, environments, response, support, participation, repair and referral.

The question is not “Can NEXIE erase adversity?” It is “Can NEXIE improve conditions and responses when adversity or stress is present?”

Was NEXIE actually used?

Implementation
Matters.

Who completed training? What learning was completed?Where was NEXIE applied? How frequently was it used? Were the five steps followed? Were the Six Rs used correctly? What adaptations occurred? What barriers appeared? Were boundaries maintained?
An outcome cannot be interpreted properly if we do not know what was actually implemented.

Ask the People
Experiencing the Method.

Evaluation should include relevant individuals, children and young people where appropriate, parents, educators, practitioners, managers, team members and organisational leaders.

UsefulnessSafetyClarityRespectParticipationBurdenUnintended effectsWhat should change
Impact includes how the process is experienced by the people involved.

Use Qualitative and Quantitative Evidence
With Care.

Qualitative Evidence

Interviews, focus groups, reflection, case studies, participant stories, journals, observation and open feedback can explain what changed, why, how it was experienced, what failed and contextual differences.

A story can illustrate an experience. It cannot by itself establish causation.

Quantitative Evidence

Confidence, participation, implementation, communication, perceived safety, referral confidence, incident patterns and engagement measures can show change where the measure is meaningful.

A number is useful only when we understand what it measures—and what it does not.

Start small and learn

Pilot Before
Scaling.

01

The Setting

Where is NEXIE being used?

02

The Population

Who is participating?

03

The Problem

What outcome or difficulty is being addressed?

04

The Intervention

Which parts are being used?

05

The Measures

What will be observed or recorded?

06

The Timeframe

When will change be reviewed?

07

The Limitations

What can and cannot be concluded?

A pilot should help improve the method as well as test it.

Show the Process,
Not Just the Success Story.

Future case studies should include context, presenting issue, what was noticed, understood and examined, the intervention, what happened, what failed, what changed, what was learned and what remained unresolved—with consent, de-identification, safeguarding and privacy where relevant.

Credible case studies include uncertainty and limitations.

Research honestly

Ask What Did Not
Work Too.

Look actively for misunderstanding, over-interpretation, excessive documentation, inappropriate use, burden, privacy concerns, role confusion, delayed referral, stigma and ineffective strategies.

A method becomes safer when it learns from failures as well as successes.

Evidence Should Include Who the Method Works For—
and Who It Does Not.

Consider age, disability, communication access, culture, socioeconomic circumstances, geography, education and workplace settings, and support needs. One implementation model may not work identically for everyone.

A method cannot claim broad usefulness if it has only been tested with a narrow group.

Protect people first

Evaluation Must
Be Ethical.

Research should consider consent, assent where relevant, privacy, confidentiality, safeguarding, data minimisation, withdrawal, burden, power imbalance and appropriate ethics review where required.

Evidence is not more important than the people who provide it.

Evidence Should Change
What We Do.

01Research02Understanding03NEXIE Method04Application05Observation06Evaluation07Improvement08Revised Practice
NEXIE should evolve when evidence shows that something can be improved.

Build progressively

A Practical
Evidence Roadmap.

01

Feasibility

Can people understand and use NEXIE?

02

Acceptability

Is it useful, respectful and practical?

03

Implementation

Is it used as intended?

04

Proximal Outcomes

Does understanding, confidence, communication or participation change?

05

Comparative Evaluation

How does it compare with current practice or alternatives?

06

Longer-Term Impact

Do meaningful outcomes persist?

These stages are a future roadmap. They have not yet been completed.

NEXIE Should Invite
Independent Scrutiny.

Future research may benefit from universities, education providers, early childhood services, schools, community organisations, workplaces and appropriately qualified researchers. No partnership is implied unless formally established.

Independent evaluation can test NEXIE beyond the people who created it.

Report what was actually found

Publish Results With
Their Limitations.

Future reporting should state who participated, what was tested, how outcomes were measured, what changed, what did not, limitations, conflicts of interest and what remains uncertain.

Credibility comes from transparent evidence, not perfect-looking results.

Impact Means More
Than Reach.

Course completions, website visits, downloads and practitioner numbers may show reach. Impact asks what changed, for whom, under what conditions, whether it mattered, lasted, was safe and was equitable.

Understanding

Better understanding of self, others and changing capacity.

Safer Response

More considered, trauma-informed and within-scope responses.

Relationships

Improved communication and repair.

Participation

Greater opportunity to learn, contribute and be heard.

Protective Conditions

Safer relational and environmental conditions.

Professional Capability

Greater confidence applying NEXIE and knowing when referral is needed.

These are intended areas for evaluation, not established outcomes.

Reach tells us how many people encountered NEXIE. Impact tells us whether anything useful changed.

Build over time

As Evidence Develops,
Make It Visible.

A future evidence library may include pilot and implementation reports, technical notes, research summaries, outcome reports, case studies, publications and evaluation tools.
