How I Communicate
How do I usually express ideas, needs, disagreement or emotion?
NEXIE for Individuals
NEXIE helps you understand how your individual patterns, relationships, environment, stress and lived experience can influence the way you communicate, learn, regulate, participate and respond.
When something changes, NEXIE gives you a structured way to notice what is happening, understand what may be influencing your capacity and decide what to do next.
Understanding Before Intervention.Start with understanding
People do not think, communicate, relate or perform exactly the same way in every situation. You may feel capable and confident in one environment and overwhelmed in another.
Stress, conflict, expectations, relationships, sensory demands, previous experience and environment can all influence how easily you access the abilities you already have.
What happened to capacity here?
What may be influencing it?
What would help me respond or participate more effectively?
Understand without reducing
NEXIE encourages you to notice patterns without turning those patterns into fixed labels.
How do I usually express ideas, needs, disagreement or emotion?
What conditions help me understand, focus, remember and participate?
What helps me feel connected, respected and able to contribute?
What changes when I feel overwhelmed, misunderstood, pressured or unsafe?
What relationships, routines, environments or strategies help me function well?
What patterns, conditions or interactions reduce my access to capacity?
The goal is not to define who you are. The goal is to understand what helps you function, communicate and participate.
Recognise the change
A change in behaviour, communication, motivation, learning, regulation or participation may be information. NEXIE encourages curiosity before judgement.
Reduced access to capacity is not the same as having no capacity.
One repeatable process
Notice what changed in your thoughts, emotions, body, behaviour, communication, relationships, participation or performance. Start with observation rather than blame.
Observe the change.Consider your usual patterns, stress, development, communication, relationships, environment, previous experiences, expectations and current demands.
Understanding changes the quality of the response.Explore what you are experiencing, what is happening between you and others, which conditions help or hinder, how you interpreted the event and what pressure or threat you perceived.
Look across person, relationships and environment.Pause, communicate a need, seek clarification, change the environment, reduce unnecessary demand, set a boundary, ask for support, repair a relationship, use the 6Rs or seek professional support.
Respond rather than simply react.Ask what helped, what made things harder, what each person needed, whether repair is required, what to remember next time and whether further support is needed.
Evaluation turns experience into future understanding.Respond more safely
NEXIE uses a trauma-informed approach without assuming that every difficulty is caused by trauma. Past or current adversity, chronic stress, relational experiences or situations that feel threatening may influence communication, attention, memory, flexible thinking, emotion, relationships and participation.
The aim is not to diagnose yourself. It is to recognise what may be happening and respond in a way that does not make the situation less safe.
Your lens matters
Conflict often begins when each person is certain their interpretation is the complete story. Experience, expectations, values, stress, communication patterns and previous relationships influence what we notice and how we interpret another person's actions.
Repair requires us to understand more than our own perspective.
Relational repair
Describe the event before trying to fix it.
Recognise feelings, bodily responses, thoughts and reactions.
Consider your experience, the other person’s experience, the relational impact and what each person may have needed.
Empathy and perspective-taking sit within Respect. Empathy creates room for another person's experience without erasing our own.Challenge the first interpretation and consider alternative explanations and responses.
Consider your part, the other person’s experience, the surrounding conditions, what helped and what escalated the situation.
Consider what could change in the response, communication, relationship, expectation, environment or support.
Build future capacity
Over time, NEXIE aims to help you increasingly recognise your strengths, early signs of stress, helpful environments, communication needs, boundaries, useful supports, relationship patterns and when you need assistance.
Self-understanding can become self-advocacy, participation and more intentional choice.Difference in relationships
People can have different communication styles, expectations, ways of processing information, needs for space or connection, responses to conflict, ways of showing care and ways of participating.
Why can't you respond like me?becomes
What do we each need to understand about the other?
Compatibility does not mean sameness. It means finding ways for difference to coexist more safely and constructively.
Different environments, different capacity
Relationships, expectations, routines and stress can influence how you respond.
Structure, communication, relationships and learning demands can affect participation.
Role, leadership, workload, communication and environment can influence access to capacity.
Belonging, inclusion, safety and expectations can affect participation.
The person remains the same person, but the conditions around them change.
Know when to go further
NEXIE is educational and developmental. Some experiences require support from an appropriately qualified professional.

In development
My NEXIE is being developed as a digital environment to help people use the NEXIE process over time. It is not yet an operational service.
